2015 World Championship

  |   Regatta, Sport, Training

World Championships are the opportunity to compare our progress against the very best in the world. You can guarantee that everyone is putting their best foot forward; using their best equipment and their best preparation…a no holds barred effort is expected. The Worlds are the ultimate progress report to be used as a tool to focus the next phase of training and preparation.

Two months before the beginning of our upcoming Olympic selection trials, we competed in the 2015 49er World Championship in Buenos Aires. After six days of racing, we were the second ranked American team by just one position, finishing in 40th position out of the World’s best 61 teams.

We are not satisfied with this result, but we are not unhappy. We are ignited. We did not meet our potential at this regatta. Our talents and abilities were not put to full use because we sailed as two individuals. We were divided. It was not until the final day of the regatta, when we were both very ill, that we came together and sailed as a unit. We had no choice but to depend on each other, because alone, neither one of us could have survived the day…nonetheless have strong races. As it turned out, while struggling physically (Barely able to contain pre race nutrition.) we did more than survive on the race course. We thrived psychologically and put together three very strong races, climbing ten positions through the overall standings. This is the way we need to function as we move forward.

Functioning as a Team, we will rise to the challenge that we have undertaken, this is certain. We are very fortunate to be joined by scow sailing and coaching legend Gordy Bowers and 49er Expert Rick Peacock for the next steps in our preparation. We have seven weeks leading into our selection trials in Clearwater and Miami, Florida; where we will qualify the Team and the nation for the 2016 Olympic Games. In these seven weeks we will work together as a Team to put together all of the pieces that we have worked so hard to build and develop over the past year. We are coming together, we are becoming the Team. The great story of this great challenge continues.

Thank you for being a part of the Team!
